The secret of Jiu-Jitsu is not in technique, it is in the mind.— Carlos Gracie
Biography
Carlos Gracie was the eldest of Gastão and Cesalina Gracie's children and is recognized as the patriarch who established Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a distinct martial art and family tradition. Born on September 14, 1902, in Belém, Carlos began training under Mitsuyo Maeda at approximately 15 years of age and studied for several years before opening Brazil's first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Rio de Janeiro in 1925. Carlos was known for his entrepreneurial spirit and promotional genius. He famously issued the "Gracie Challenge," offering open invitations in Brazilian newspapers for fighters of any style to test their skills against Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. These challenges helped establish the art's reputation for effectiveness against larger, stronger opponents. Beyond his martial arts contributions, Carlos developed the "Gracie Diet," a nutritional philosophy emphasizing food combining that many Gracie family members still follow. He had 21 children across multiple relationships, many of whom became accomplished martial artists. Carlos passed the teaching responsibilities to his younger brother Helio while he focused on building the Gracie brand and philosophy. He passed away on October 7, 1994, having seen his family's art spread worldwide.
