What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport focused on grappling and ground fighting. BJJ emphasizes technique and leverage to control opponents and apply submissions, allowing smaller practitioners to defend against larger attackers. Developed from Japanese Judo by the Gracie family in Brazil.

Armbar from Guard

submission

A hyperextension attack on the elbow joint from guard position, using your legs and hips to isolate and control the opponent's arm while applying pressure against the elbow.

Closed Guard

guard

Fundamental guard position with legs wrapped around opponent's waist, ankles crossed behind their back. Controls distance and limits opponent's attacking and passing options.

Guillotine Choke

submission

A front headlock choke that wraps around the opponent's neck from the front, attacking during takedown attempts or from guard. Both blood choke and air choke variations exist.

Inside Heel Hook

submission

A devastating leg lock that attacks the knee by rotating the heel while controlling the hip with ashi garami positions. Rotates the knee laterally, attacking ACL, LCL, and meniscus.

Rear Naked Choke

submission

A blood choke applied from back control where one arm encircles the opponent's neck while the other reinforces, compressing the carotid arteries to restrict blood flow to the brain.

Triangle Choke

submission

A blood choke using your legs to form a triangle around opponent's head and one arm, compressing the carotid arteries. Iconic BJJ submission effective from multiple positions.
