Training Styles Guide

Gi vs No-Gi Training

Understanding the two styles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and how we integrate both into our comprehensive training model at Beyond BJJ Mooresville.

Gi Training

Traditional uniform training

Training in the traditional kimono (gi) provides more grip options and slows the pace, allowing for deeper technical development. The gi is required for traditional belt promotions and most IBJJF competitions.

Advantages:

  • More grips and control options
  • Slows the pace for technical development
  • Traditional progression and belt system
  • Teaches grip fighting fundamentals
  • Better for self-defense applications
  • Required for IBJJF competitions

No-Gi Training

Athletic wear training

No-Gi training uses athletic wear (rash guards and shorts) without the traditional uniform. This creates a faster-paced, more dynamic style that emphasizes body control and wrestling-based techniques.

Advantages:

  • Faster-paced, more athletic
  • Translates directly to MMA
  • No equipment needed beyond athletic wear
  • Better for real-world street scenarios
  • Emphasizes body mechanics over grips
  • Growing competitive scene (ADCC)

Our Training Model

At Beyond BJJ, we believe in developing well-rounded practitioners through both styles.

Youth Programs

Our youth programs (ages 4-17) train primarily in the Gi to develop strong fundamentals, grip fighting, and respect for traditional martial arts progression. Students earn belt promotions through demonstrated proficiency and character development.
